Step 01 – Install the Windows Update agent version 7.4.7600.226 on the Windows XP machine, and try.

Obtain version 7.4.7600.226 Windows Update Agent.

• x86 based Windows Update agent

• x64 based Windows Update agent
• itanium based Windows Update agent

Step 02 – Exclude %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder from AV software, and try.

Step 03 – Reset the data store, and try.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service: net stop wuauserv
2. Rename the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution.old
3. Restart the Automatic Updates service: net start wuauserv
4. Restart the Client PC

Step 04 – Missing/Invalid ‘SelfUpdate‘ virutal directory on IIS

1. Open IIS manager on the server, expand: ServerName\Sites\Selfupdate
2. Check if the virtual directory is listed.
3. If the virtual directory is not listed, create one with the name of ‘Selfupdate‘
4. The Selfupdate virtual directory should be pointed to: C:\Program Files\Update Services\SelfUpdate, Check it by clicking Basic Settings of this virtual directory.
5. Permission of the Selfupdate virtual directory.
