Windows Activation Error

Invalid product key

The product key you have entered will not work this edition of Windows Server 2012.

You must either run Windows Server 2012 Setup or enter a Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation product key.

Windows Activation Error

You can use slmgr.vbs -ipk product number to change your product number. But this also may fail with following error (s).

Error: 0xC004F069 On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004F069' to display the error text.

Error: 50
This Windows image cannot upgrade to the edition of Windows that was specified.
The upgrade cannot proceed.
Run the /Get-TargetEditions option to see the what edition of Windows you can upgrade to.

You can't change the windows edition if its a domain controller.

Error: 50

Changing this Windows edition is not supported online for a domain controller.

TechNet: Evaluation Versions and Upgrade Options

To see current version execute below command:

DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition

To see supported target editions execute below command:

DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions

To update with a new product key run below command:

DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula

Server will restart twice.

Now do the Activation.

Windows is activated.

Hi Syak

The above steps are very easy.

- First run "DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions" command. It will output the supported upgrade Editions.
- Then run "DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerS tandard /ProductKey:XXXX X-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula". Replace Edition and Product Key with yours.
- Server will reboot twice.
- After that Activate the Product.
(If the server is Domain Controller you have to Demote it -> Activate Product -> Repromote)

I have also a domain controller running the eval version of Windows Server 2012 Standard.

Is it possible to activate it with a Server 2012 Standard Key with there steps?

See technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspx

If the server is a domain controller, you cannot convert it to a retail version. In this case, install an additional domain controller on a server that runs a retail version and remove AD DS from the domain controller that runs on the evaluation version. For more information, see technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh994618.aspx.

This all works if you purchased OEM or Retail license. What if you have a volume license MAK or KMS? My keys aren't working

This is great. It work for me after some junior staff use a EVL copy downloaded from MS website to setup server for me instead of using Disk from MS.

This is the only article which gets to the point, and explains clear what are the steps to upgrade from Eval to retail license key.

Thank you
